Terrace Restaurant is a Turkish restaurant which has been in Zagat's first three for the last 10 years in it's category. Market Design was commisioned for demolition of the existing and re-construction of a new building project comprising 1000sf cellar, 2000 sf ground and 2000 sf terrace dining at the corner of 46th street and 2nd avenue. Market Design's strategy was to generate a first class restaurant not only with its interior and terrace dining but also with its urban context. The international style black steel and glass skyscraper to the north and the white painted brick town house style building to the west were major urban influences Market Design used in the urban concept. The interior was also a derivative of the exterior grid-shape geometry. The bar design, like the exterior facade was created by geometric play of 3 grid-shapes. On the exterior these elements were stone tile clad, where int the interior prime quality stones such as onyx, creme granite and Turkish travertines were intertwined with walnut veneer shelving and wine rack systems. There is a dumwaiter that serves the 80 seat terrace dining. The lower level dining is 95 seats with the possible expansion of the sidewalk cafe with 42 seats. Market Design generated a very substaintal profitability for the client Ali Dogan as well as generating an architectural and urban statement in this prime location.
